Learning can be life changing.

My learning has always been a blend of the academic side and the practical. But I do believe I've learnt as much from those I've worked with, good line managers and colleagues at all levels, as from anywhere else.

One of the best learning experiences I've had was the mental health for managers training with Oakwood Training. The course was really dynamic with leaders who had personal experiences of challenging mental health in their lives. Working in groups with colleagues from children's services really broadened my knowledge and made me reassess my team approach.

In ETS, we're about to embark on a training programme to implement 'Outcome Star' a tool to measure the soft outcomes our young people achieve. We have several examples of young people who've come through employability programmes to join Barnardos as apprentices and they've gone on to be promoted and study at higher levels. Learning can be life changing for a young person and for existing colleagues across the organisation. I would strongly recommend that everyone engages and enrols in The BU.

I'm so enthusiastic about apprenticeships, because learning on the job brings it all alive in a real environment. And it's not just for young people. It can now support colleagues with several years of experience to continue to develop.
