Data Protection and Security Training

Our responsibilities

Barnardo’s has a responsibility to ensure that all staff and volunteers understand the importance of managing personal information.

Regardless of where you work in the organisation it’s likely that you will be processing personal data, whether it’s working with children, corresponding with supporters, reconciling payments, recruiting staff or taking gift aid details, most of our activities will involve handling personal data and usually on a digital platform.

Managing data securely and confidentially is not only a requirement of UK-GDPR and The Data Protection Act 2018 but often a condition of commissioner contracts we are required to meet when delivering services to children and families. It is therefore important that we ensure Barnardo's staff and volunteers receive regular training to understand the vital role we all must play in keeping data secure.

For new starters

Barnardo’s runs a mandatory induction to be completed within the first two weeks of work. New starters will complete a Data Protection and Security training module as part of this induction.

For Staff with an e-learning account

Annually, staff will be required to complete the mandatory Data Protection and Security training. The 2022 training launched in May. The link to the training can be found here.

For Volunteers and Barnardo’s staff without an e-learning account

A training booklet has been produced called; The Data Protection Guide.  The material should be reviewed annually, and the declaration of completion (on the back page) should be signed and shared with your line manager to evidence compliance.

If you have any questions or concerns now, or any time in the future, please ask your line manager or email the data protection team on dpo@barnardos.org.uk.
