Time off for public duties

Find out how we can support you if you perform a public duty.

We comply with the Employment Protection (Consolidation) Act 1978 which gives all our employees the legal rights to reasonable time off without pay if they are:

  • an elected member of a Local Authority
  • serving on any statutory tribunal
  • a member of a Regional or Area Health Authority
  • a Justice of the Peace
  • a governor for an educational establishment maintained by a Local Authority
  • a member of a Water Authority or a River Purification Board

If there is a clear business benefit to Barnardo’s agreeing to such time off your line manager may be able to approve that you’re paid for the time off.

Reasonable time off with pay may also be granted, with your line manager’s agreement, to:

  • Children's Services employees for work as members of professionally based bodies in the social work field
  • Fundraising and Communications employees for work as members of organisations where such membership can be seen to be beneficial to the fundraising work of Barnardo's
  • Finance and Corporate Services employees for work as members of professionally based bodies directly related to their Barnardo’s work

Payment may also be made for time off to prepare for such duties and for any necessary travelling time.

Time off with pay will be granted only if the line manager is satisfied that you have made sure that your work is completed without the need for overtime or excess hours payment and that the quality of their work is maintained to the required standard.
