Trauma Informed and Responsive Barnardo’s

Our journey to infuse a trauma informed approach in everything we do.

Our journey to infuse a trauma informed approach in everything we do.

At Barnardo’s, we recognise that events and experiences are felt as individuals, requiring individual responses and support.

Trauma can be defined as having experiences that are physically or emotionally harmful and that have lasting adverse effects. This can happen to anyone.

Many of the people we work with and/or support are likely to have experienced trauma. Building a workforce and culture that can effectively identify and respond leads to better outcomes for children, young people, families and colleagues affected. It is important for us all to play our part in fostering safe and trusted relationships and environments to support and empower recovery. Becoming a trauma-informed and responsive organisation requires collective action.

Protection Umbrella

Trauma is everyone’s business.

We believe children, young people, families and colleagues should have access to environments that are supportive and embed the principles of trauma-informed care within its culture and operational activities. We are committed to creating environments that ‘do no harm’ and support relational repair, respectfully and safely.

The principles of trauma informed care are: Safety, Trust, Voice & Choice, Collaboration & Connection, Power sharing & vulnerability, Cultural Humility and Wellbeing & Self Care.

Seven Principles

Barnardo's Trauma Courses

Training opportunities for colleagues.

From January, this space will include the new Trauma Induction module, available to all existing colleagues and volunteers. As part of our ongoing commitment to providing a quality induction and onboarding process, we are integrating this into the mandatory induction modules for all new colleagues and volunteers from April 2024.

Barnardo's Trauma Hub

Bank of trauma informed resources for colleagues, including external CPD training and learning via the Trauma Hub in conjunction with PESI UK.

Trauma Workplace Group

A space for sharing resources, engaging with colleagues, hearing updates and learning more about our journey to becoming trauma informed.

Becoming trauma informed

Creating and maintaining a trauma informed culture and environment is an ongoing journey that touches every aspect of our charity. The Trauma Programme is part of our People & Culture Directorate and is a foundational cornerstone of the People & Culture strategy.

Below are the levels we will travel through in reaching our trauma informed goals. It also recognises that some colleagues will be striving to become trauma responsive (roles working with and for children, young people and families). Beyond trauma responsive, we also have a growing number of trauma specialist colleagues and teams providing therapeutic trauma care and delivering training to partners to assist their own journeys to becoming trauma informed.
