Delivering Excellence: Performance and Growth Policy

Key information about how to thrive and grow at Barnardo's

What do we mean by Delivering Excellence?

At Barnardo's, we are committed to delivering excellence for the children, young people and families who we support. The pursuit of excellence is what all colleagues can aspire to but will look different from role to role.

This policy covers how we recognise colleagues' performance at Barnardo's, and in line with our new approach to Performance and Growth, provides a framework for developing and growing our colleagues across the charity.

It is essential that colleagues are enabled and feel empowered to deliver their role and contribute to our purpose and Strategy.

Is this for you?

This policy and procedure will be for all Barnardo's paid colleagues, who have successfully completed their probationary period. It is also for line managers who need to support the development of individuals in their team(s).

  • Colleagues who sit in Grades A, B and C: You will follow this approach from 1 October 2023.
  • Colleagues who sit in Grades, D, E and F: Please follow current Performance Development Review (PDR) process until May 2024. This new approach will be introduced to your development journey in Spring 2024.

This policy does not apply to Barnardo's As and When workers or volunteers.

Key points

  • A trauma-informed approach should be considered throughout the process with adaptations made as necessary.
  • Based on the delivery of goals and demonstration of our behaviours, eligible colleagues will have the opportunity develop and grow at Barnardo's.
  • Please regularly check our dedicated page for the latest information about our approach.

You can download the full policy and toolkit documents at the bottom of this page. View our FAQs regarding Performance and Growth.
