Hybrid Workplace Offer

Find out more about the charity's hybrid working model policies and processes.

Workplace Offer is the charity's hybrid working initiative relevant to Barnardo's colleagues and is built around three areas:

  1. People - it is based on trust, flexibility, transparency and empowerment.
  2. Technology - investment in modern and appropriate hardware and software that enables interaction and collaboration in a virtual environment.
  3. Space - ensuring you have safe and effective places that enable you to do your role.

View more details of these areas in the drop-downs below.

The extent to which the model applies to colleagues will depend on the nature of the role, team and tasks. We encourage you to have conversations with your line manager about what the offer means to you and to embed a hybrid approach wherever possible. This may mean working at one of our stores, services, working at home, at one of our Collaboration Hubs or any combination of these.

All resources, guidance and checklist documents for you and your teams can be accessed and downloaded at the bottom of this page.

If you have any queries, please email our Business Service Solutions colleagues.

People

Wellbeing and personal safety are a priority, with homeworking risk assessments and display screen equipment (DSE) being a requirement for all colleagues. We also provide an office at home allowance and guidance on what you can claim for and how in our expenses policy. You can also view the range of support available for colleagues in our Wellbeing Offer.

Our approach has adapted and reflects the modern working environment which has numerous positive impacts such as increased geographical distribution of colleagues, introduction of collaboration spaces and innovative technology. Plus we trust and empower our colleagues to decide the best way to deliver their role and bring their whole selves to work. Employee and apprentice recruitment guidance is available for managers responsible for recruiting to ensure that all appropriate jobs are advertised with reference to our Workplace Offer.

This is documented further in our Equality Impact Assessment (EIA). Additional support on how to manage your team remotely can be found through The BU manager training on B-Learning as well as policy and tips on working from home

Technology

Our modern way of working utilises user-friendly software, such as Microsoft Office and Dynamics D365, and hardware to support the Workplace Offer. ClickTravel is our travel management portal to book hotels, trains and flights and our flexible desk and meeting booking platform YAROOMS complements this.

Space

We provide collaboration hubs for colleagues to come together plus flexible spaces with desks and rooms available to book. We'll always consider the accessibility and environmental sustainability of a location when designing our hub spaces. Find your local workplace in the map above.

What does being a UK based charity mean for colleagues?

As a UK based charity, Barnardo's requires colleagues to be UK residents, based in the UK and to complete their roles from within the UK (with the exception of colleagues providing Barnardo's services in Jersey and colleagues who live in the Republic of Ireland providing services in Northern Ireland). Working outside of the UK can trigger all sorts of tax, social security, and other legal implications for both colleague and Barnardo's. Therefore, we will only consider such requests in very exceptional circumstances, and only on a short-term, temporary basis to deal with a serious personal or family emergency.

Before any work from a location outside of the UK is undertaken, new requests by colleagues must be discussed with their line manager in the first instance. Prior to such requests being considered and approved at Corporate Leadership Group/Team level (as appropriate), colleagues wishing to make such a request should consider business implications, as well as any financial and legal considerations of working remotely abroad on a short-term, temporary basis to ensure they remain compliant with any local laws.

All decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis following an assessment of any business implications and legal considerations, including employment law, tax, IT, data protection and health and safety.

All costs related to work undertaken abroad including seeking professional advice will be the responsibility of the colleague and will not be reimbursed by Barnardo's.

Where any such request is declined, this decision will be final and there will be no right of appeal. Colleagues in this instance may wish to explore other options such as requesting annual leave, a period of additional paid or unpaid leave or extended leave. These requests should be made to the line manager.
